Artist's Comments

Square-Enix and Tri-Ace's Valkyrie Profile Silmeria's coming out pretty soon (Sept in US, my #1 most wanted game), so I thought it's time to do some fanart. In actuality, I just wanted a wallpaper. :)

As it turned out, I spend 95% of the time on Silmeria since her armor is symmetrical and all and 5% on the background (you can tell). The background was planned to be more complicated than this (this is where Lenneth first arrive on Midgar, so there should be a town there, but it's in fog or maybe since this is a hundred years earlier, it doesn't exist yet, hehe), but I wanted to move on. There are some mistakes with her armor, since when I started, I only had small pictures. When bigger scans came out, I was already too far in.

I also planned to do a similar picture with Alicia, Princess of Dipan; but her clothing are even more complicated than Valkyrie's. So unless someone pays me...oh lets say $640.93, I'll put that one on hold. :P

That's so good. It would take me forever to get a background AND character that good. The character looks unbelievably smooth and well-finished, and the background has exactly the right sense of scale.

And how did you do that grass?

The grass is done with the following step:

1) do patch coloring with the values of the areas you want.
2) with a custom grass brush set at 3-7% flow use the value of the area your coloring and color in layers.
3) try it out until you're happy with the result.

Fiuuu... good pic, and the background, no words...

Did you use a software for the background?

Everything's done in CS2, mostly with just the regular roundtip brush.

Words cannot describe it, an absolutely unbelievable work of art. Bravo!
